A huge congratulations to Aaron Lew, Aimee Lew, Ella Guiao and John Chen from Manurewa High School, who entered the International Mathematical Modelling Challenge and who have been judged as one of the top five entries globally.
The aim of the challenge was to use the power of mathematics to help better understand, analyze and solve real world problems outside of mathematics itself – and to do so in realistic contexts. The teams were asked to develop a model that identifies the earth’s carrying capacity for human life under current conditions.
57 teams from around the globe competed. They worked at their own schools during a five-day period between March 11th and May 6th 2019, and then submitted their papers.
The Manurewa High School team will attend an awards ceremony in Hong Kong next month.
A key take away from the challenge is the fact that, if the students’ calculations are correct that the earth’s carrying capacity is significantly greater than current population levels, then a positive shift is necessary in the way we look after our planet and its resources.
Stuart Wilson (Director) and Danica McPhee (Associate Director – Project Manager Education), on behalf of Maynard Marks as sponsors, met with Aaron, Aimee, Ella and John to learn more about the challenge. We’re in awe of your achievement so well done guys!
