Hans is a highly experienced Registered Architect, with wide-ranging expertise in residential (including multi-unit), commercial and heritage projects. He is intimately familiar with all aspects of residential architecture for both new builds and renovation work, irrespective of the scale of the project.

Having run numerous projects from inception to completion, Hans is intimately familiar with the entire process of getting buildings built. From the initial client meetings, liaising with consultants, Building Consent authorities and site personnel. Hans’ thorough knowledge of his craft enables him to achieve cut through and deliver structures that are economical, functional, clean, that look good and work as intended. He enjoys mentoring younger team members throughout the design process. He is also regularly engaged by law firms as an Architect Expert Witness in legal disputes.

Hans’ design philosophy starts with a modern interpretation of the axiom from the ancient Roman Architect, Vitruvius ‘Good architecture must be strong, useful and beautiful’ and runs through to Louis Sullivan’s ‘Form follows function’, though there is much debate about what the function of good architecture is. For Hans it comprises the sensible use of materials, the thoughtful organisation of spaces, and designing buildings that are nice places in which to be.

An effective communicator with a proven client focus, Hans builds excellent relationships with his clients, colleagues and other project participants. He believes that good architecture comes from strong client relationships and a will to make a skilled contribution to achieve a great result.

At Maynard Marks Hans designs and documents a wide-variety of projects from new houses and apartment buildings through to educational buildings, retirement villages and remediation work.

Hans brings skills, enthusiasm and passion to all projects with which he’s involved, with the ultimate goal being a happy and satisfied client and a building that works well and everyone enjoys.
