The Project:
We were initially appointed by Tātaki Auckland Unlimited to undertake a condition assessment, asbestos survey, and lead paint testing. The initial condition survey identified key condition issues relating to deferred maintenance, which in turn led to the scoping of a heritage restoration project.
The heritage restoration project included replacement of the slate roof and repair of the 130 windows that made up the original, 19th century joinery. Our detailed investigations, including individual assessments and scopes of work for each joinery unit informed the restoration process. We worked collaboratively with the project architect and contractor, through a staged approach, minimising disruption to the operational gallery.
Our Value Add:
By adopting a rigorous technical methodology, and sound heritage restoration principles the project achieved the goal of retaining as much important heritage fabric as possible, whilst ensuring joinery was repaired to the requisite standard.
Liaising closely with the architect, client and contractor, we were able to be responsive to project needs, completing on-site assessments and producing reports with tight turnaround times, to ensure overall timelines were met.
The joinery in this building, celebrated for its ‘timeless beauty’ is now successfully repaired, and restored, along with the new slate roof that will provide shelter to the building for many years to come.
