Trainee Project Manager Luke Thompson’s team wins 2019 ArchEngBuild Challenge

Congratulations to Trainee Project Manager Luke Thompson on being part of the winning team in the 2019 ArchEngBuild Challenge run by BRANZ.

This was an intensive three-day competition for 30 of New Zealand’s top final year tertiary students in architecture, engineering and construction management, held from 2-4 July in Christchurch. Luke was selected to represent UNITEC and was teamed with Tony Wang (Engineering) and Jacky Zheng (Architecture) both from Auckland University.

The teams were tasked with a brief to design a building to enhance the Christchurch environment, whilst demonstrating the importance of effective interdisciplinary collaboration. They had 50 hours to develop the concept design for an economically viable, zero carbon building with at least some aspect of it open to the community. They then had to prepare and deliver a 15 minute pitch to a panel of 4 judges.

Luke, Tony and Jacky designed a multi-purpose three-storey building with a community kitchen and indoor gardens on the ground floor, convention rooms on the second and a greenhouse at the top, allowing people to purchase plots and create a community garden.

Well done guys.
